Christmas celebration begins with the arrival of St. Nicholas
Young and old gathered on Friday, Dec. 1, for the annual arrival of St. Nicholas at St. Joseph Church.
But before the wonder of the season began, Father Dan shared news of how Dutch settlers called him Sinter Klass. The name was Anglicized to Santa Claus, who we know as St. Nicholas, the protector of children and the patron of sailors and sea travelers. Mrs. Gina Banks gathered children around as she read a story about the beginning of the candy cane.
And then, St. Nicholas announced his entrance with bells. He marched down the center aisle, was introduced by Father Dan and then distributed candy canes to the children at the service.
