Anointing of the Sick Sunday, October 24th at 10:30 a.m. Mass In our Catholic tradition there are two sacraments of healing: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. Both sacraments are concerned with restoring a person to health, spiritually and physically. The source for the sacramental ministry to the sick is rooted in biblical tradition, specifically James 5:14-15: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them summon the presbyters of the church and they should pray over and anoint the sick with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick and the Lord will raise them up. Have they committed any sins? They will be forgiven." The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated here at Saint Joseph on Sunday, October 24th at 10:30 a.m. Mass. People suffering from both short and long term illness are encouraged to receive this wonderful sacrament which confers the graces necessary to face serious health issues with strength, courage and peace. Those who face a serious illness or surgery or who are impaired by old age are also eligible to receive this sacrament. Sacramental Procedure during Mass You may sit anywhere you choose. When directed to do so, all those desiring to receive the sacrament will approach the Priest who will be standing at the foot of the Sanctuary. In giving the sacrament, the priest anoints the sick person on the forehead and hands. During this anointing, the priest says: “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.” The recipient responds with, "Amen." After the Anointing of the Sick Mass, a Prayer Shawl Minister will be in the back of church to take orders for a shawl for themself, a relative, or a neighbor.
